What is a filter?
General operation
In principle, a filter is used to display a list of items. Before items can be displayed, the appropriate criteria have to be defined. These can vary from the date a booking is to take place to using a post code to search for a customer.
Since a filter can display multiple columns, a structure is needed to define this display. We call this structure a View. A view is a collection of settings. The features of a view are:
- Name: a logical name can make it easier to find the filter again later
- Columns: determines which columns are visible and in what order
- Sorting: determines how the rows are sorted, based on which column they are in, and ascending/descending
Example filter customer view
A filter in the customer context might contain:
- All customers resident in 'Utrecht'
- Columns: customer_id + Last name + Place of residence + E-mail address
- Sorted by last name
