How do I redirect an old link to a new page?
A redirect automatically sends a visitor of an old link on to the right page. Useful when a page got a different address, when there is a new version of the terms and conditions, or when a product was replaced. Links on your own website, in old emails, at partners and in Google keep working.
Adding a redirect
- Go to Configuration > Customer page > Content pages > Redirects and choose Add redirect.
- Under Redirect on, choose what the old link is:
- A page address (alias): the part after your domain, for example
terms-2024. It cannot be the address of an existing page. - Link parameters: a link such as
front.php?mod=calendar&product=5. Paste the whole old link, or only the parameters that matter, for examplemod=calendar&product=5. Every link with these parameters is redirected, whatever else it contains.
- A page address (alias): the part after your domain, for example
- Under To, fill in where the visitor should go:
- a page address of your own site, for example
terms-and-conditions; - a link within i-Reserve, for example
front?mod=calendar&product=21; - a full address, also on another website, for example
https://www.example.com/contact; - for link parameters only:
?product=21. Only that parameter is replaced and the rest of the link (language, style, configuration) stays as it is. See My product was replaced: how do old links keep working?
- a page address of your own site, for example
- Choose the Type: Permanent (301) when the old link is replaced for good, or Temporary (302) when you want to go back later. Search engines take over the new address with a permanent redirect, so that is usually the best choice.
- Save. The redirect works right away.
Good to know
- A redirect can never have the same address as an existing page: an address is either a page or a redirect.
- A redirect that would send visitors round in a circle (A to B, B to A) is refused when you save it.
- With a redirect on a page address, extra parameters of the link are passed on, for example the campaign code from a newsletter.
- Only normal visits are redirected. A form that is sent to an old link is not redirected.
- The list shows for each redirect how often it was used and which page the last visitor came from.
Which old links are still in use is shown in How do I see which links visitors cannot open? Managing redirects requires the right menu_front_configpages.
